How did Susanna Hoffs and Jay Roach meet?

Jay Roach

Jay Roach met the former lead singer of The Beagles in 1991 during a dinner party that their friends arranged. They had a dinner at West Hollywood and Roach was already waiting for her.

“He was facing away from me and as I sort of in slow motion stepped towards him, he sort of stepped forward and smiled at me. I smiled back at him, and I remember distinctly thinking, ‘This person, there’s a kindness to him and a warm heart.’ I just instantly thought that he had a trustworthy air about him…It turned out to be true,” she said.

During their meeting, two other men joined the dinner, “It was just me and bachelors number one, two, and three, like ‘The Dating Game,’ but I only had eyes for Jay,” Hoffs said.

Roach then pulled the chair and took the coat for her, “I was like, ‘Wow, he’s such a gentleman,’” she said. “This is such unfamiliar territory.” In the rock ‘n’ roll world, Hoffs added, dating was “more down and dirty…but not in a bad way. It’s just what I knew.”

“When he told me he was from Stanford, I had a moment,” Hoffs recalls. “It was very visual, like at the carnival when the strong man swings the hammer. It was like ‘Bang’ and the bell rang. It’s the only time my degree mattered to anyone in this town,” said Roach.

When did Jay Roach and Susanna Hoffs get married?

After their first encounter, the two became close friends.  The two shared many things about each other and knew that both had mutual interests. It didn’t take long for the pair to fall in love with each other.

Roach was barely making anything and was working seven different part-time jobs just so he could live a life comfortably. He was broken and unfortunately, his vehicle, a 1973 VW van was also in the worst state possible.

Nevertheless, the two dated happily and Roach even converted his religion to Judaism, so Hoffs’ grandfather Ralph Simon would officiate their wedding. The couple then married in 1993 in Los Angeles at Sephardic Temple, the couple now share two children.
