Is The Who Making a New Album? Here’s What We Know
For a long time, fans of The Who believed that the band was done making new music. Their lead singer, Roger Daltrey, had said in several interviews that he wasn’t interested in recording another album. He explained that their last album, WHO, cost a lot to make and didn’t feel very successful to him.
Because of that, many people thought the band had quietly reached the end of their studio career.
But now, things might be changing.
Recently, guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend shared something surprising. He posted about a new music writing studio he bought in London. The studio was originally built by pop singer Rick Astley. While the studio itself was interesting, what really caught fans’ attention was a reply Townshend made in the comments.
When a fan said there was “no way” The Who would make another album, Townshend responded:
“You might be wrong. Roger wants to give it a try.”
This short reply has created a lot of excitement. It suggests that Daltrey, who once didn’t want to make another album, may now be open to the idea.
Looking back, WHO (2019) actually did quite well on music charts. It reached No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 3 in the U.K. Even so, Daltrey felt it wasn’t worth the effort at the time. Now, however, his mindset may be changing, and that could lead to new music from the band.
Even without a new album, The Who have stayed active. In 2025, they went on a North American farewell tour called “The Song Is Over.” Many fans thought this would be their last tour, but there is still a chance they could perform again in the future.
Outside of music, Daltrey is also known for his charity work. He supports the Teenage Cancer Trust, which helps young people with cancer. He and Townshend are expected to attend the charity’s 2026 shows at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London.
So, what does all this mean?
Right now, nothing is officially confirmed. But for the first time in years, there is real hope that The Who could return to the studio. If that happens, it would be a big moment for rock fans around the world.
