Rock music has seen its fair share of wild stories, but this one might top them all. According to Wings drummer Denny Seiwell, Paul McCartney and his wife Linda once mailed their baby’s poop to a journalist after a bad review. Yes, you read that right.
The story comes from McCartney’s new book, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, which was released on November 4th. The book looks back on the ups and downs of McCartney’s band Wings — the group he formed after The Beatles ended.
Seiwell shared the strange incident in the book. He said the band had invited a journalist to see what life was like on the road with Wings. They gave him the VIP treatment: access to their soundcheck, backstage, and even the tour bus. But according to Seiwell, the journalist left before the concert started — and still went on to write a terrible review about the show.
Seiwell said the review mocked everything — how the band lived, how they traveled, and how they sounded. Feeling angry and betrayed, Paul and Linda decided to have a little fun with their revenge. They reportedly took a small plastic soap dish from their hotel, scooped up one of baby Stella McCartney’s diapers, and mailed it straight to the critic.
“So Paul and Linda took one of those little plastic soap dishes, and they got one of Stella’s turds, put it in the soap dish, wrapped it up, and sent it to him,” Seiwell said. “It was the perfect response to a crude British pressman.”
McCartney himself hasn’t confirmed whether the story is true or not, so it might forever remain one of rock’s funniest mysteries. But it certainly adds another layer to the legend of Paul McCartney — not just as a musical genius, but also as someone with a mischievous sense of humor.
Beyond the strange tale, McCartney has been reflecting on Wings’ legacy. He recently said that interest in the band is growing again, calling it “like being transported back on a magic carpet.” Wings, once dismissed by critics, is now getting a new wave of appreciation from younger fans.
There’s also a new documentary titled Man on the Run, directed by Morgan Neville, which will premiere on Prime Video in February. The film dives deep into McCartney’s life after The Beatles and his journey with Wings.
And while McCartney might laugh about that old rumor today, it’s a funny reminder that even the biggest stars can lose their cool when faced with unfair criticism — though not everyone handles it quite as creatively as mailing baby poo.
