In 2014, while on stage in Philadelphia, Barry Gibb asked Samantha, the daughter of Maurice Gibb, to join him in a lovely rendition of the well-known Bee Gees song.
The Gibb family is one of the most talented bunch on the planet with Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb breaking charts over the decades. Barry Gibb singing with Maurice’s daughter her father’s favorite song “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” is to be cherished forever.
On May 19, 2014, Samantha Gibb made her stage debut with her uncle Barry at the Wells Fargo Centre in Philadelphia, eleven years after Maurice Gibb passed away suddenly at the age of 53 from cardiac arrest.
The Bee Gee duet was recorded on his Mythology global tour, which saw him perform extensively throughout the United States and travel to the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
The pair hugged each other before the performance and Barry introduced the song by saying, “We’re going to sing a song that is our favorite, and certainly one of her dad’s favorites and we hope you like it.” Samantha sang the opening verse, singing Skeeter Davis’s hit “The End of the World”, remembering the loss of her loved one. Barry came in and transitioned into “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” which has a similar theme to the lyrics. Samantha continued the second verse of the Bee Gees number adding her soulful side to the song. The pair then joined together for the chorus which created a beautiful moment.
The Bee Gees released “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” as the lead single from their album Trafalgar in 1971. Al Green would subsequently cover the song, and it appears on the Notting Hill soundtrack.
After some time apart, Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the popular song in 1970 at Barry’s place. Barry said, “Robin came to my place, and that afternoon we wrote ‘How Can You Mend a Broken Heart’ and that obviously was a link to us coming back together. We called Maurice, finished the song, went to the studio and once again, with only ‘Broken Heart’ as a basic structure, we went in to the studio with that and an idea for ‘Lonely Days’, and those two songs were recorded that night.”
